Technology Tools
Software and tools I use in teaching to enhance music education and student engagement.
Notation Software
MuseScore
A fantastic free program that can work on PC, Mac, or Linux. Students can use this as a wonderful alternative to expensive software. Plugins enable solfa syllables within noteheads or letter names above noteheads.
SmartScore64
Scans any musical score so you can transpose, create worksheets, etc. from musical scores.
Finale
A notation program with essential tools for educators. It also allows you to import SmartScore files.
Musicianship Apps
Rhythm Sight Reading Trainer
A musicianship app highly recommended for choirs. Connect an iPad to your projector and do 5 minutes as part of the warm-up.
Sight Sing
Another excellent app for developing sight-reading skills. These apps are transforming singers into readers.
Music Animation Machine
A fascinating creation that helps students see music through graphic notation. Using the free MAME Player, you can import MIDI files and see them play graphically.
Screen & Audio Capture
Snagit
An easy to use screen capture program. In conjunction with audio routing software, you can record scrolling Finale files with internal sound.
SoundSiphon2
An easy to use program that allows you to change your settings so that internal sound is recorded, removing ambient sounds. Very helpful for Finale files.
LoopBack
Another audio routing application similar to SoundSiphon2, more feature-rich but more expensive.
Soundflower
A free plugin that allowed changing sound settings easily. No longer supported but still available. Now superseded by SoundSiphon2.
